Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany

Regensburg, where I spent my last semester of college, is better known as a Medieval town than a student town.  But its strongest, best memory for me is Kneitinger's Brewery, which had succeeded greatly since my last visit.  We visited Valhalla, which overlooks the town from the other side of the Danube, which was a first for me.

VALHALLA -  King Ludwig II of Bavaria's commemoration of German-speaking people who have contributed to world culture, as updated...

Wolgang Amadeus Mozart, composer
Empress Catherine the Great of Russia (born in Prussia)
Klopstock, "the holy singer"
Gregor Johann Mendel, scientist whose work was the basis of genetics
Albert Einstein
Composer Richard Strauss
Composer Franz Schubert
Artist Peter-Paul Rubens
Composer Johann Sebastian Bach
Composer Richard Wagner (King Ludwig's favorite)
Bismarck
Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, Bishop of Wurtzburg
Composer Ludwig van Beethoven
William the Conquerer
artist Hans Holbein
Doctor Martin Luther
Nicolaus Copernicus
Goethe (author)
Who dat? Well, she is German-speaking, after a fashion...
Artist Albrecht Duerer
Immanuel Kant, philospher
Poet Friedrich Schiller
Edith Stein
Post WWII political leader Konrad Adenauer
"In remembrance of all who contributed bravely to the resistence against wrongs, violence, and terror of the Third Reich."
Sophie Schoh (?)
Empress Maria Theresia of Austria (who was originally French)

A tour of Regensburg's Old Town.

The Vitusheim, a dorm at U. Regensburg, where I spent a lot of time visiting my friend Sam.
My room was on the end on the third floor (?)
Interior courtyard of Bischofshof Hotel in Regensburg
Our hotel room looked out (and UP!) at the Cathedral! and yes, we were there for Sunday morning!
Directly out the hotel window
across and up left out the hotel window
the Hatmaker was one of the few businesses still the same from 1974-1975!
It is SO hard to get the whole cathedral's front in a photo!
one plats over from the Cathedral ("Dom")
Neupfarrkirche "new parish church"
narrow streets are now pedestrian -- good choice!
a Keymaker!
David and Goliath - check placement of Goliath's elbow and forearm!
the Old Stone Bridge, built c. 1250
The infamous boy on the finished bridge, gazing toward the Cathedral wondering if it was done yet?
The Danube River
Boy on Bridge looking at Cathedral.
The buses used to run across this bridge - no more!
The Residence, where Napolean reportedly stayed.
Blending in quite well.
The gargoyles get me every time!

Kneitinger Brewery and a walk home after supper.

Kneitinger Brewery turns on the "BOCK" light when that beer is available
Where the man is sitting used to be a "Stammtisch" - "die die sitzen da sitzen da da die alweil dasitzen." Those who sit there sit there because they always sit there.
Mr. and Mrs. Kneitinger, who ran the brewery/restaurant when I was a student.
This was an outdoor alley, now transformed into a "beer hall"
Blue enamel street signs with the old "f" for "s" -- "gasse" means alley.
Immigration is an issue in Germany, too!
Kloster Weltenburg makes great bock bier - where a liter has the nutrients of a loaf of black bread!
