Phipps Conservatory: "Columbian Exposition" Garden Railroad
Text of the sign shown below:
The garden railroad display you see here celebrates the World's Fair of 1893 known as the Columbian Exposition. Held in Chicago, this first all-electric celebration of innovation -- illuminated by the Pittsburgh-based Westinghouse Corporation -- was attended by more than 27 million people and is still considered to be one of the grandest events in the history of the world.
The Phipps Connection: When the World's Fair closed in October 1893, many of the tropical plants that had been on display there were packed up and transported to Pittsburgh by rail to become part of the collection at the newly opened Phipps Conservatory - the largest and finest glasshouse of its time.
paulaingeneva connection: Love trains. Love gardens. Visited the Lincoln Park Conservatory in Chicago, built between 1890 and 1895 with cousin Joanne and Margaret (the Lincoln Park conservatory is shown in the photo below), and Chihuly glass was all over that conservatory, too! Love the book "Devil in the White City" which is all about the creation of the Columbian Exposition; seeing it on display at the Phipps was a real treat!
