On May 8, 2015 - the 70th anniversary of the Allied Victory in Europe in World War II - Washington's Mall was treated to a thrill of a lifetime! 15 waves of WWII planes flew over us, beginning at 12:10 p.m. -- tourists and bureaucrats gathered on the Mall to admire them. I attended with Kathleen and practiced using my new zoom lens. We remarked on how different the sounds were - some were horrifyingly loud. Here are the results - I don't have time to do the research to match the photos with the chart that was posted in the Washington Post, and they didn't come exactly in order, but each wave represented a specific battle from World War II - and were not restricted to the European theater.
If you want to match them yourself, use the "Wash Post Article" button to link to:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/local/flyover/ It describes the planes, gives silhouettes and measurements and shows the map of the flyover. I was closest to the Lincoln Memorial, standing just in from Constitution Ave.
The photos loaded in reverse order for some reason. I loved the biplanes, and see that "Diamond Lil" was among them (couldn't read that from the ground!). I wasn't near any monuments or memorials, so have left a few with trees so you can see what we saw from the ground, but otherwise zoomed in to capture as much detail as possible. What a moving way to spend lunch! Enjoy!
